Pain Celeste — Celeste skins for Deadlock
I couldn't find any Celeste mods I liked, so I made my own. Initially, I just wanted a model, but I enjoyed the process of modding so much that I created a complete Celeste overhaul. Thought I would share it instead of hoarding it for just me and my friends. The mod contains a custom Pain model from the series Naruto. Custom weapon and bullet effects. New effects for every ability to make them themed after Pain. Name and icon changes for all abilities. Sound effect changes for all abilities. New voice lines for nearly every situation (except pings and other niche moments for competitive reasons). Portrait changes in the character selection and for near-death, default, and gloating. Removed horn glow during Radiant Dagger stacks for a purple eye glow. Added Girei (Pain's theme) to play whenever maxed Radiant dagger stacks are achieved, having it loop over time and fade out when the buff expires or Celeste dies. Girei's theme also has proximity volume, so others can hear it when nearby. Added and removed several other smaller effects and sounds. I have minor experience in modeling and coding, mostly just as a hobby. I have little to no experience in modding, so if there are bugs, I do apologize. I thought I would share this anyway, though, because I enjoyed making it and think it's a pretty solid mod.
Compatibility
Model replacements are the first thing to break when Valve edits a skeleton, so re-check after each patch. It conflicts with any other mod replacing the same Celeste asset — two in the addons folder means whichever loads last wins, and the other one silently does nothing.
Is it safe
It is client-side: the file lives on your machine and other players see the default game. Cosmetic addons have not produced bans, but Deadlock is in active development and nothing about mods is officially supported. Keep a copy of the folder before a patch and remove it if the game stops launching.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install Pain Celeste?▾▴
.vpk into game/citadel/addons and name it pak01_dir.vpk. That folder only loads once gameinfo.gi lists it, which is a one-time edit — check the install guide. Is Pain Celeste safe to install?▾▴
.vpk is a data archive, not a program, so it cannot execute code the way an installer can. The risk is provenance. This one has 350 installs, so a problem would have surfaced on its GameBanana thread. Mods with almost no downloads from accounts with no history have had none of that scrutiny. Will other players see this skin?▾▴
Can I run it alongside other mods?▾▴
pak01_dir.vpk and pak02_dir.vpk installed, pak01 wins and the other does nothing.Does it still work after the latest patch?▾▴
gameinfo.gi and remove your search paths, which stops every manually installed mod at once — redo that edit and they come back. Separately, model replacements break first when Valve edits a skeleton; recolours and HUD mods usually survive. The author posts updates on the GameBanana page.Where does the download come from?▾▴
How do I remove Pain Celeste?▾▴
.vpk from game/citadel/addons, or toggle it off in the Deadlock Mod Manager library. Mods never overwrite game files, so nothing needs repairing afterwards.
