FPS Boost Map (Vanilla/Potato) + Black Sky — quality of life/fixes for Deadlock

A darker, cleaner and lighter-on-the-GPU look for Deadlock, made for weak PCs and for people who find the default map too bright and cluttered. WHAT IT DOES. - Pure black sky (all sky variants). - Removes the big blue / amber / green light cones and glows hanging above the city (Patron, Shrine, base and street glow particles). - Removes shop, hotel, neon and street signs, and lamp bulbs. - Removes the vortex / funnel effects and the Patron / Shrine ambient FX. - Cleans up the Hideout (props, clutter, ambient particles). - Darker world overall, while keeping the game's colors (not a gray-only look). - Flattens large textures to cut VRAM and loading cost. WHAT IT KEEPS. All gameplay effects stay: abilities, bullets, health packs, rejuvenator, power-ups, soul jars, spirit orbs, zip lines, urn, rift, boss attacks and telegraphs. TWO VERSIONS (use only ONE at a time). 1) Vanilla-colors version: keeps the game's own materials and lighting, only darkened. Closest to the original look. 2) Flat / Potato version: flat, unlit materials using the real average color of each surface. Lowest GPU cost. Brightness is tuned to be dark but readable. NOTES. - A game update can break or reset parts of this mod. - Some effects are particles (r_drawparticles 0 hides them all), this mod only removes the ambient ones. - Feedback welcome: if something gameplay-relevant disappeared or something still glo…

Compatibility

Model replacements are the first thing to break when Valve edits a skeleton, so re-check after each patch. It conflicts with any other mod replacing the same asset — two in the addons folder means whichever loads last wins, and the other one silently does nothing.

Is it safe

It is client-side: the file lives on your machine and other players see the default game. Cosmetic addons have not produced bans, but Deadlock is in active development and nothing about mods is officially supported. Keep a copy of the folder before a patch and remove it if the game stops launching.

Frequently asked questions

How do I install FPS Boost Map (Vanilla/Potato) + Black Sky?▾
Two ways. With Deadlock Mod Manager, use the Mod Manager button on this page and it downloads and places the file for you. By hand, put the .vpk into game/citadel/addons and name it pak01_dir.vpk. That folder only loads once gameinfo.gi lists it, which is a one-time edit — check the install guide.
Is FPS Boost Map (Vanilla/Potato) + Black Sky safe to install?▾
A .vpk is a data archive, not a program, so it cannot execute code the way an installer can. The risk is provenance. This one has 2,316 installs, so a problem would have surfaced on its GameBanana thread. Mods with almost no downloads from accounts with no history have had none of that scrutiny.
Will other players see this mod?▾
No. Deadlock loads mods client-side, so the file only changes what you render. Everyone else sees the default game, in every mode including ranked.
Can I run it alongside other mods?▾
Yes, as long as they change different things — a skin and a HUD work together fine. Two skins for the same hero do not: only one can be applied, and Deadlock picks the lower-numbered file. With pak01_dir.vpk and pak02_dir.vpk installed, pak01 wins and the other does nothing.
Does it still work after the latest patch?▾
A Deadlock patch can overwrite gameinfo.gi and remove your search paths, which stops every manually installed mod at once — redo that edit and they come back. Separately, model replacements break first when Valve edits a skeleton; recolours and HUD mods usually survive. The author posts updates on the GameBanana page.
Where does the download come from?▾
Directly from the author's GameBanana page. deadlocktrade.gg indexes mods and links back; it never rehosts files, so you always get the release the author published.
How do I remove FPS Boost Map (Vanilla/Potato) + Black Sky?▾
Delete its .vpk from game/citadel/addons, or toggle it off in the Deadlock Mod Manager library. Mods never overwrite game files, so nothing needs repairing afterwards.
