Better Map / Customize — quality of life/fixes for Deadlock
Better Map — a points-of-interest overlay and customization layer for Deadlock's minimap. Better Map marks every breakable spawn on your minimap and lets you tune the map to taste — without replacing the game's own minimap rendering, so it stays fast and update-friendly. Features Crate & statue overlay. Breakable spawns are drawn on the minimap — crates in blue, golden statues in yellow. Small objects are shown too, and can be hidden. Auto level switching. Markers follow you between the surface and the underground, so you only see the POIs on the level you're actually on — or switch to showing every level at once. Native settings panel. Open settings from the scoreboard/detail view; the panel is built from Deadlock's own settings UI, so it looks and behaves like part of the game. Toggle crates, statues, small objects and auto-level, and adjust marker size and opacity. Minimap tuning. Resize the minimap and adjust map opacity. Universal Mod Manager support. With UMM installed, Better Map's settings appear as a tab in UMM's shared window and are saved by UMM between sessions. Without UMM it works standalone with its own in-HUD settings. Rebuilt on the current Deadlock build, and it never blocks the native minimap (pings and drawing pass straight through the overlay).
Compatibility
Model replacements are the first thing to break when Valve edits a skeleton, so re-check after each patch. It conflicts with any other mod replacing the same asset — two in the addons folder means whichever loads last wins, and the other one silently does nothing.
Is it safe
It is client-side: the file lives on your machine and other players see the default game. Cosmetic addons have not produced bans, but Deadlock is in active development and nothing about mods is officially supported. Keep a copy of the folder before a patch and remove it if the game stops launching.

Frequently asked questions
How do I install Better Map / Customize?▾▴
.vpk into game/citadel/addons and name it pak01_dir.vpk. That folder only loads once gameinfo.gi lists it, which is a one-time edit — check the install guide. Is Better Map / Customize safe to install?▾▴
.vpk is a data archive, not a program, so it cannot execute code the way an installer can. The risk is provenance. This one has 13,181 installs, so a problem would have surfaced on its GameBanana thread. Mods with almost no downloads from accounts with no history have had none of that scrutiny. Will other players see this mod?▾▴
Can I run it alongside other mods?▾▴
pak01_dir.vpk and pak02_dir.vpk installed, pak01 wins and the other does nothing.Does it still work after the latest patch?▾▴
gameinfo.gi and remove your search paths, which stops every manually installed mod at once — redo that edit and they come back. Separately, model replacements break first when Valve edits a skeleton; recolours and HUD mods usually survive. The author posts updates on the GameBanana page.Where does the download come from?▾▴
How do I remove Better Map / Customize?▾▴
.vpk from game/citadel/addons, or toggle it off in the Deadlock Mod Manager library. Mods never overwrite game files, so nothing needs repairing afterwards.
